The transition from middle school to high school is exciting, but it can also be challenging. HSC's freshmen program ensures that our students face those challenges successfully and build a strong foundation for their four years of high school and beyond.
Our 9th-grade teachers specialize in helping students develop the maturity and growth mindset necessary for advancement in high school, college, and career. They communicate regularly with each other and with our 9th-grade students' families so that we can support our freshmen as a team.
Most 9th-grade students at HSC take World History, Phy-Chem, English I, either Algebra 1 or Geometry, and Freshman Seminar. Students also take elective classes, studying art, music, Latin, Spanish, physical education, and/or content-area electives. Advanced 2nd-semester freshmen have access to our early college courses, as well.
In addition to keeping a close eye on our 9th-grade students' academics, the cohort teachers organize events to help their students connect. All freshmen are strongly encouraged to participate in the overnight experience at Camp Cedarcrest, a longstanding HSC tradition, and students who demonstrate a commitment to our core values, the CRAIGs (compassion, respect, action, integrity, greatness) have even more opportunities.
