SEXUAL EDUCATION UNIT AND OPTING OUT

Connecticut General Statutes (CT GS Par.10-16c) mandate local boards of education to develop a family life education curriculum that includes “human sexuality; parenting; nutrition; and the emotional, physical, psychological, hygienic, economic and social aspects of family life. The curriculum guides may not include information pertaining to abortion as an alternative to family planning”.

Boards of education are also required to provide instruction on AIDS (CT GS Par.10-19b).

Lessons on human sexuality are included in “Growing Up & Staying Healthy: Understanding HIV & Other STIs”  Unit of the Michigan Model for Health curriculum. The objective of this unit is to help students to gain the information, skills and motivation to make healthy decisions about sex and sexuality throughout their lives.

Parents have the right to opt out of the sexual education and AIDS unit (please note:  NOT FROM THE ENTIRE HEALTH CURRICULUM!).

To do that, they need to sign and submit a consent form to their school’s respective itinerant teacher who teaches sexual education before the start of the semester with this unit.

For students whose parents have chosen to opt out of the sexual education unit, extra lessons from the existing units are taught at the health teacher’s discretion.

    CONSENT FORMS

If as a parent or guardian you decide to opt out of the sexual/AIDS education unit, please download, sign and submit the form below to your child’s itinerant health education teacher:
